In a surprising turn of events, public housing residents began adopting the same discourses used in the media to depict favelasâas lawless, disorderly, and violent places. Young male teenagers were instructed by their mothers not to walk through the favela on their way back from school to avoid being confused with criminals. I once heard a mother screaming to her teenage son from her fourth-floor window: âI donât want you walking through the favela!â In order to avoid going into the favela, residents took alternative routes that often required them to circumnavigate a large area of the favela. Ironically, the favela, which is commonly seen as a no-go area, was being reproduced as a no-go area by public housing residents, former favela residents who still lived within the geographic boundaries of the favela. Geralda, who had previously lived in the boca but now lived in the most distant public housing building on the edge of the favela, once said, âI never let my kids play in the favela. In fact, the youngest one has never been there.â
When I asked residents if they still visited their old neighbors, several said that their old neighbors had stopped talking with them. When residents relocated to public housing, some of their old neighbors began to see them as rich and stuck up. When I asked Jussara if she still kept in touch with her old neighbors she replied:
